'A concours-restored Samba Deluxe with exceptional provenance'
This outstanding 1956 23-Window Samba has undergone a complete nut-and-bolt restoration by One on One Restorations, ensuring authenticity, precision, and long-term investment value. Considered the most desirable and collectible of all Volkswagen buses, the early split-screen Samba Deluxe — with its skylight windows and full sliding fabric roof — represents the pinnacle of VW’s iconic Type 2 lineup.
The vehicle was stripped to bare metal and treated with zinc chromate prior to receiving its correct and original-style two-tone finish. Panel fit and paintwork are to concours standard, with every detail restored to factory accuracy. All rubber seals have been replaced using rare new old stock items, ensuring authenticity throughout.
The suspension has been completely renewed, with fresh link pins, kingpins, hoses, and brake lines. A sympathetic upgrade to disc brakes on the front improves safety and drivability, while drums remain fitted at the rear. The bus rolls on its original solid steel wheels with genuine hubcaps, beauty rings, and brand-new BF Goodrich whitewall tyres.
The original interior has been retained, with seats re-padded and original covers reinstalled. The cab and passenger floor mats are original black rubber and remain in excellent condition. A professionally fitted new cloth headliner complements the fully restored full-length sliding fabric roof, maintaining the signature Samba experience.
Power comes from a 2.0-litre engine built by renowned specialist Daz Chandler, with an uncompromising specification designed for reliability and smooth performance:
- VW AS41 Crankcase
- CB Performance forged cromoly crank, Unitech conrods, and 13lb flywheel
- Webcam 110 camshaft with Scat followers and alloy drive wheel
- Mahle forged barrels and pistons
- CB Performance cylinder heads with 40x35 stainless valve
- HD valve springs & cromoly retainers
- Manton cromoly push rods, bolt-up rocker shaft kit
- Kennedy Stage One clutch cover with Daiken HD drive plate
- Comp ratio: 8.5:1
This setup provides a perfect blend of period-correct character and modern reliability, making the Samba suitable for both concours display and enjoyable road use.
The 23-Window Samba Deluxe is widely regarded as the “holy grail” of VW buses. Produced in very limited numbers, especially in the mid-1950s, surviving examples with original details and concours-level restorations are increasingly rare. This bus represents an outstanding opportunity for collectors seeking a reference-quality example, whether as a centrepiece of a serious VW collection or as a blue-chip automotive investment.
