A rare find with a remarkable story.
This 1964 13-window Deluxe Samba is a genuine Left-Hand Drive factory M130 model — meaning it was ordered new without the sunroof and skylight windows. It was originally delivered on August 31st, 1964 to San Diego Motor Imports and first registered to a Mr. Lee of Chula Vista, California. Incredibly, the bus still carries a piece of its early history: its original dealer-supplied customer ID card, found tucked behind the front panel during the restoration — a charming and rare time capsule.
Fast forward to a few years ago: the bus was rediscovered sitting in a California yard alongside other derelict classics, its original paintwork sun-faded and peeling under the West Coast sun. Though complete, it was clear the Microbus needed a full overhaul. It was decided the best course of action was a complete strip-down — the vehicle was taken back to a bare shell and media blasted to properly assess and address all areas of corrosion.
A meticulous restoration then began. Key structural sections were repaired or replaced, including the front A-posts and crossmembers (necessitating removal and careful reinstallation of the original front panel), new cab floor, doglegs, cargo floor, inner and outer sills, battery tray, rear corners, and lower side panels. Thankfully, the chassis itself remained in excellent original condition.
Once the structural work was completed, the van was primed and repainted in its original factory colours — Sealing Wax Red lower and Beige Grey top. To faithfully replicate the original weathered appearance it had acquired over decades in the desert, the top coat was hand-polished through in selected areas, exposing layers of red below to echo the California sunburnt patina.
Mechanically, the Samba has been completely overhauled. The braking system was entirely renewed, including brake shoes, wheel cylinders, hoses, and master cylinder. Steering has been refreshed with a new idler pin, and the gearbox was stripped, cleaned, and refitted. A fully reconditioned 1600cc engine was sourced and fitted in place of the missing original, now paired with electronic ignition, a new carburettor, and a new starter motor.
Many original parts were retained and sympathetically restored, including:
- Deluxe trim
- Switchgear
- Door handles
- Bulkhead
- Interior panels
- Speedo and gauges
- Cargo door fittings
The result is a showpiece with soul, retaining its original identity and full of character, backed up with a folder of supporting paperwork including a Volkswagen birth certificate and full photo documentation of the restoration process. It also comes with thoughtful accessories like a sunshade for the side doors, screen and window blackout covers (magnetic), and two sets of keys.
If you're looking for a Samba with both pedigree and presence — one that stands out for its originality, attention to detail and heritage — this is it. On the market for £28,000.
