1979 Volkswagen Palomino T2 Late Bay – Extremely Rare & Beautifully Restored

This 1979 Volkswagen Palomino camper is an exceptionally rare Bariban conversion, produced for just one year. Only around 70 were built, and very few remain today. Many have been repainted or modernized, but this example retains its original factory Pastellweiss L90D (White) finish, complete with the recreated 70s-style side stripes—just as it left the factory.

Lovingly restored over 10 years, this Palomino has had extensive panel replacements, a full mechanical overhaul, and an interior refresh, with over £45,000 spent on bringing it up to an excellent standard.

Designed as a luxury high-top camper, the Palomino was a premium conversion in its day, featuring a full 4-berth layout, spacious living area, and a well-equipped kitchenette. This example is rock-solid, reliable, and ready for adventures—whether for personal use or as a unique addition to a camper hire fleet.

A Rare Piece of VW History

  • The Palomino was Bariban Motorhomes’ top-tier luxury conversion, produced in Newton Abbot, Devon, from 1979-1980.
  • Designed by Tony Dilnott, this high-top camper was an eye-catching, high-spec model.
  • Bariban only converted brand-new, factory-built Type 2s, and every Palomino was RHD and finished in white to match its unique fibreglass roof.
  • The production run was cut short when VW ceased Type 2 production in 1979, making surviving examples incredibly rare.
  • This camper has been meticulously restored while keeping its original character and features intact.
