This 1961 Volkswagen Split Screen Bus is a well-sorted and tastefully upgraded example, originally imported from Texas around 2013 before undergoing restoration and improvement work in the UK. Finished as an 11-window model, it benefits from a great specification that blends classic looks with practical upgrades for modern usability.
The bus features an excellent window setup, with all side windows being pop-outs, complemented by front and rear safari windows, giving it a true period-correct look while offering a fantastic open-air driving experience. It also comes fitted with a full-length roof rack, adding to its classic stance and practicality.
Mechanically, the vehicle has been significantly upgraded. It is powered by a strong 1955cc engine built using a new aluminium case, Engle camshaft, CB rods, forged pistons, Los Bandito heads, and twin 40 Dellorto carburettors. This setup delivers impressive performance while retaining reliability. Braking has also been improved with Wilwood front discs and calipers, offering enhanced stopping power over standard.
Further upgrades include a 1303S gearbox paired with an Boxwagen IRS conversion kit, providing improved drivability and handling compared to the original setup. Inside, the bus features a Gene Berg shifter, adding to the overall driving experience.
The interior has been thoughtfully finished in a Devon-style camper layout, mirrored for left-hand drive, creating a practical and usable living space while maintaining a classic aesthetic. Additional features include an Eberspächer D2 night heater with a programmable controller, with a discreet diesel tank mounted in the engine bay, making it well-suited for year-round use.
Electrically, the bus is fitted with a split charge relay and leisure battery system, with a recently replaced leisure battery. As with many classic setups, it is recommended to keep the batteries on a trickle charger when not in use.
Externally, the bus presents well overall, though there are a few minor imperfections to note, including some small areas of micro-blistering beginning to appear and a stone chip on the front bumper—nothing unusual for a vehicle of this nature and use.
The odometer currently reads 45,662 miles (not verified).
