'A wonderfully original 1964 split-screen bus with a rich backstory, documented provenance, and almost totally original paint'
This bus was originally delivered new to Los Angeles on 23rd December 1963, finished in its striking factory colours of L380 Turkis with L289 Blue White, and interior trim in Como Green (code 81). A genuine six-pop-out bus, it retains its period character alongside careful upgrades and preservation.
The bus has enjoyed a colourful life on both sides of the Atlantic. For many years it sat on a family farm in Montana before being rescued and sympathetically recommissioned. Enthusiast owners have documented its history through detailed correspondence, recalling the original find, its journey through restoration, and the care taken to retain originality wherever possible. The current paperwork file includes letters, photographs, and invoices, alongside the official VW birth certificate confirming factory specification.
The bus is running a rebuilt 1600 single-port engine, updated to 12v, with original German rebuild parts used for the braking system. Brakes were fully rebuilt including master and wheel cylinders, with original riveted shoes and unpainted drums — described by the mechanic as the best stock brakes they’d ever driven.
Other highlights include:
- Rebuilt 1600 SP engine, converted to 12v
- Original solid steel 15” wheels with correct date stamps
- Five Hankook tyres with minimal mileage
- Pop-out windows, door seals, and detailed electrical system working throughout
- New parts fitted: brakes, tyres, wiper blades, cables, glass & seals
- Interior: complete seating, frames and springs restored and painted, ready for covers
- Headliner removed due to age, new one required
- Original VW key plus spare copy
- Clean US title included with history file
Cosmetically, the bus retains much of its originality, with some repairs carried out sympathetically. A couple of very small areas were repainted in correct epoxy primer and PPG urethane, while others retain visible signs of use and character. The result is a clean, solid, and very usable split bus that balances originality with reliability.
This is a desirable “Turkis/Blue White” 1964 split bus, factory-delivered to the USA with M-codes including six opening side windows and lap-belt mounts. The accompanying VW birth certificate verifies authenticity, making this a strong candidate for both collectors and enthusiasts who value history as much as condition.
