This 1969 early Bay Window, affectionately known as “Rose”, is a beautifully sorted example that perfectly balances classic Volkswagen character with modern usability. Over the past three years, it has undergone extensive mechanical restoration with a clear goal: retain the original look and feel while transforming the driving experience into something far more capable and enjoyable in today’s traffic.

Finished with a stock ride height to preserve its authentic stance, it sits on slightly more aggressive all-weather tyres, giving it a subtle, purposeful edge without losing its vintage charm.

Underneath, the van is structurally solid, with previous chassis repairs carried out prior to paint. It presents well overall, with only a couple of small, surface-level cosmetic blemishes that do little to detract from what is an honest and usable classic. The front lower crossmember has been repaired in the past and remains solid, though, like any classic, could be refreshed in the future if desired.

The real transformation lies in the drivetrain. It has been fitted with a Subaru EJ201 Forester engine conversion using components from Fellows Speedshop, including adapter plate, flywheel and refurbished heads, paired with a Freeway Flyer gearbox. Combined with renewed bushes and gear linkage, this setup delivers a van that starts reliably, cruises comfortably at modern speeds and feels significantly more refined than a standard example.

The driving experience is further enhanced by a fully refreshed suspension setup, including a new front beam and Protech adjustable rear coilovers, along with a Wilwood front disc brake kit that provides confident, modern stopping power.

Inside, it has been thoughtfully upgraded for touring and everyday usability. A new wiring loom, leisure battery with cross charger, and solar setup make it well-equipped for off-grid use, while USB charging points, a fridge and dashcam add practicality. The audio system has also been tastefully modernised with an Audioengine Bluetooth interface, Kenwood amplifier, six speakers and a compact subwoofer, all controlled via a tablet setup for navigation and media.

It rides on SSP wheels wrapped in Michelin Agilis CrossClimate tyres, The addition of a Spacelift roof further enhances its versatility for trips away.

Accompanied by a well-kept history file and clear evidence of significant investment, this is a van that’s been built to be used. It drives with confidence, keeps up easily with modern traffic, and offers a level of usability that makes it stand out from standard examples.

A huge amount has been spent to get it to this point—now ready for someone to simply get in and enjoy.
