For Sale: ‘70 LHD Karmann Ghia

‘Sold by Volkswagen, built by Karmann and styled by Ghia, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a semi-rare collectible which never fails to turn heads.’

This particular car is no exception.

This is one of those honest, well-loved cars that’s had the right kind of attention over the years — the kind that keeps them on the road and driving exactly as they should. The current owner has invested heavily in the important stuff: last year it received a fresh 1641cc build with all new pistons and barrels, bearings, Scat cam, hi-lift rockers, new Webers… the full works. It’s the sort of setup that gives these engines the little extra punch they deserve, and you can feel it the moment you pull away.

Looking through the detailed paper work we found an Original Volkswagen Maintenance Record. It shows that the car began its life in Long Beach, California, where it was purchased by Mr. Rodriguez in March 1970. It appears that this ghia left the US in 1998 when it was imported and registered in the UK. Being a later Ghia it has a heated rear window, disc pads on the front and a dual circuit braking system.

Mechanically, it’s been going through a quiet transformation. All the flywheel seals have just been done, along with new rocker gaskets, valve clearances, new dizzy cap, arm, leads and plugs — so it’s crisp, clean and running beautifully. A brand-new EVA Resto front beam has been fitted and built up properly with new brakes and lines. The wheels are 15” Cosmic’s and there are fresh front tires to finish the job. It really does drive nicely.

Electrically, it’s had the best possible treatment: a full rewire using an Iain Burns loom, new switches, new rubbers and badges, and rebuilt OEM gauges. Inside, it’s been fully soundproofed and trimmed with new carpets, door cards and headliner. A Vintage Speed shifter and stealth steering wheel bring things up to date without losing the spirit of a classic ghia.

There’s a really good pile of receipts and paperwork that comes with it too.
Mileage reads 94,150 (non-verified).

Overall, this is a sorted, characterful Ghia with the right upgrades, sensible mechanical investment, and a clean, well-thought-out interior. A great one for someone wanting a properly renewed classic without starting from scratch.
