For sale – 1971 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Camper Van (“Gracie”)

Originally ordered new by a U.S. serviceman while stationed in Germany, this rare U.S.-spec 1971 Early Bay Westfalia is steeped in history. The M-plate confirms its authenticity, showing it was built as a genuine Westfalia Campmobile before being shipped to the United States at the end of his tour.

While little is known about its exact life in the States, records suggest “Gracie” spent time in Texas before being imported into the UK in 2007. In 2019, she underwent a full and comprehensive restoration by Dean at Classic Car Revivals — no expense spared, with extensive mechanical and structural upgrades to bring her into modern usability while retaining her vintage charm.

The specification is exceptional: a 1776cc big-valve engine with a 110 cam and components supplied by The Volkswagen Engine Company, twin 36 Dellorto carburettors, long-range gearbox, oil cooler with remote filter, and a Red9Design twin wishbone front suspension conversion with rack and pinion steering. Braking is handled by four-pot front calipers with disc brakes and a complete new rear braking system.

Inside, Gracie benefits from a new roof, fresh carpets, seat covers, and flooring — blending period-correct details with practical, comfortable usability. Although she was built to be driven and enjoyed, she’s been largely stored since her restoration, covering very few miles (1254 miles non-verified).

A truly lovely example of a well-executed restoration — solid, well-sorted, and ready to provide her next owner with years of happy motoring and memories.
