For sale: 1973 Volkswagen Bay Window Westfalia Automatic
'A rare automatic Westfalia with documented restoration, long-term ownership and genuine camper pedigree'
This 1973 Bay Window Westfalia is a wonderfully characterful camper with a strong backstory and years of careful ownership behind it. Built in February 1973 in Germany and originally supplied to Australia, it was imported to the UK in 2009 and professionally restored by the well-respected specialists 'G’day Kombis'. The restoration was carried out properly, with longevity and usability at its core rather than any cosmetic shortcuts, and this is supported by extensive photographic documentation and paperwork.
The restoration involved a full bare-metal strip-down, during which all corrosion was correctly identified, repaired and treated before refinishing. Once the structure was addressed, the van was repainted in a classic two-tone Guinea Blue and Pastel White — a timeless combination that suits the Bay Window perfectly and complements its original lines beautifully.
Inside, the van retains its correct Westfalia Continental interior, which was retrimmed during restoration. It features an early Westfalia pop-top roof with a double bunk, making it ideal for family trips or longer adventures. A new genuine Westfalia canvas was sourced from the USA and fitted, completing the roof correctly.
Power comes from a rebuilt 1970cc (2.0-litre) engine, which has covered approximately 7,000 miles since rebuild. This is paired with a factory automatic gearbox — a rare and increasingly sought-after option — which was rebuilt shortly before the van’s import to the UK. On the road, it drives just as it should: relaxed, smooth and well-suited to touring.
The current owners have cared for the van for around 15 years and have clearly enjoyed using it as intended, making many memories along the way. It has been maintained rather than stored, with recent work including a new fuel tank, new fuel lines and additional maintenance to ensure it remains reliable and ready to use.
This is a genuine, well-sorted Bay Window Westfalia that offers history, character and the right mechanical work where it counts. If you’re looking for a properly restored automatic Westfalia with strong provenance and usability, this example stands out.
