For Sale: ‘79 RHD Black Karmann Beetle Convertible

This beautifully restored December ‘79 Beetle Convertible is a superb example of one of the final German-produced Beetles, originally delivered to California in its desirable “triple white” specification. First registered to Mr and Mrs Strickland in the USA, it represents one of the last models built before production ceased in Germany in 1980.

The car was imported into the UK in 1993, at which point it was converted to right-hand drive and refinished in black. It benefits from an extensive history file, including written accounts from previous owners that document a clear timeline of its life, along with a substantial collection of MOT certificates and supporting paperwork. It is currently fitted with a set of baby Fuchs alloy wheels, which complement the black exterior and hood perfectly.

Over the years, the vehicle has received significant investment and careful attention. In February 2019, a replacement black mohair cabriolet hood was supplied and fitted by BAS International, a well-regarded UK manufacturer known for producing high-quality convertible tops, at a cost of £1,300. In March 2020, a reconditioned turnkey engine was installed by The VW Engine Co. in London. Built using traditional methods to original factory specification, the 1600cc engine provides both reliability and authenticity.

Most notably, in September 2024 the car completed a comprehensive 12-month, full nut-and-bolt, body-off restoration carried out by Evil Ben’s in Cornwall, a respected specialist with over 20 years’ experience in building show-winning vehicles. This extensive work saw the body stripped back to bare metal, treated for rust, and fitted with new panels where necessary before receiving a high-quality respray in black. The chassis was sandblasted, powder-coated, and protected against corrosion, while the engine, transmission, brakes, and suspension were all thoroughly overhauled. Inside, the car was retrimmed with new upholstery, instruments were restored where required, modern soundproofing was added, and the entire electrical system was rewired.

The result is a Volkswagen Beetle Convertible presented in exceptional condition throughout, combining originality with carefully considered enhancements for improved comfort and usability. With its late production status, detailed provenance, and substantial restoration investment, this car represents an outstanding opportunity to acquire a highly desirable classic convertible ready to be enjoyed.

Few motoring experiences capture the spirit of open-air driving quite like a classic Beetle Convertible. Whether it’s a relaxed countryside cruise or a sunny weekend outing, the combination of timeless design, unmistakable character, and wind-in-the-hair freedom makes every journey feel special. With summer days ahead, this beautifully restored example is perfectly suited to be enjoyed exactly as intended.
