‘Freshly updated with a full interior makeover and brightened original colourway’
This fantastic 1978 right-hand drive Late Bay began life as a Westfalia Continental and has recently undergone a sensitive refresh—inside and out. Originally carpet-lined in grey and looking a little tired, its solid condition made it the perfect base for a thoughtful facelift.
The exterior received localised paintwork in Pastel White (L90D), while the lower half was resprayed in its original and highly desirable Bright Orange (L20B) — also known as Leuchtorange, a true 1970s icon. New white-band tyres (correctly weight-rated) were fitted to freshly restored wheels and bumpers, restoring its cheerful, period-correct appearance.
Inside, the transformation is equally impressive. The traditional full-width Westfalia rock ’n’ roll bed has been beautifully reupholstered by Devon Custom Trimming in cream and taupe vinyl with diamond stitching. Matching buddy seats, cream-trimmed door cards, and interior panels with taupe piping complete the cohesive look. Tangerine and off-white vinyl tiles line the floor, subtly referencing the orange exterior without overpowering it.
The kitchen is brand new—built around a fresh Kustom Interiors pod housing a fridge, twin-burner hob, and sink. There's a removable table, overhead cupboard, and 240V mains hook-up plus split-relay charged leisure battery for off-grid use. In the roof, you’ll find a solid twin bunk with new mattress and even a previously fitted sunroof to maximise light and airiness. When it’s time for sleep, the rock ’n’ roll bed folds into a full-width double.
The cab area now sports a smart pair of Porsche-style tombstone seats in cream, new carpets, and a wood-rim steering wheel. A Pioneer double-DIN stereo head unit brings modern functionality. Two 3-point seatbelts and a central lap belt offer safe seating for five.
Mechanically, the 1700cc Type 4 engine has been fully serviced (09857 miles unverified), with a brand new full exhaust system and heat exchangers fitted. The adjustable front beam is set slightly lower but can be tweaked to suit. An outstanding, refreshed example that balances period charm with modern practicality—ready for adventure, beach weekends, or just daily fun.
