With us we have this 1966 Right hand Drive Split Screen Danbury Transporter Pop Top Double door campervan. It is the only known surviving, registered VW type 216 Danbury conversion on the road today.
It was restored by the current owner who discovered it as a rolling shell. They had the paintwork returned to its red/white split colours and documented the whole process in a photo book available for viewing. They have also provided a full list of all mechanical parts restored including (but very much not limited to) front beam stripped and rebuilt, fresh suspension components, new clutch kit, the 1500cc stock engine was stripped and re-built and had new pistons, barrels and bearings. It even had a new carb and electronic ignition fitted for reliability.
The list provided is very extensive and does not stop there.
In the very descriptive lists provided by the previous owner it is also displayed how many variations you have to play with in the interior layout. You can have the standard driving position seating. You can use the bed frame to bridge across for an L shape settee feel. You can place it into the sleeping position or even a dining room by using the table top in the rear as a 3 legged table (The table can be used with 4 legs for an alfresco dining experience!) The cooker and sink unit are fully removable allowing for more alfresco or camping dining experiences. The cooker can even fold away into itself to allow more interior space.
The removability of all components allows you to also use your camper as a van if you require a multi purpose vehicle.
This example also includes some of the following Danbury accessories:
A double wardrobe in the rear compartment,
Overhead sun visor shelfs,
Danbury pop top roof,
Interior fluorescent light,
12v conversion with or without extra battery,
And much more.
After restoration the underside was fully undersealed to keep it sturdy for the years to come.
It currently sits on 61908 miles and is classed as a Historic Vehicle so is MOT and tax exempt.
Available for £39,000 which is fantastic for such a crazy rare bus that has been fully restored, it even won 3rd at The Split Screen Van Clubs AGM this year, up against some major players .
