'68 Original LHD Type 3 Squareback / Variant

This absolutely stunning 1968 Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback has just arrived, and it’s a truly special example. Originally from Oregon, USA, the car has been cherished throughout its life and remains remarkably original and untouched. It still retains its Oregon Certificate of Title, original Type 3 owner’s manual, US registration, and even its original registration plate, all adding to its outstanding provenance.

The vehicle was first registered on 3rd July 1968 at Motor Services Inc in Baker, Oregon, to Ira Kimball. We have the original service record, stamped through to 7th February 1973, when it was purchased the following day by John Graves of John Day, Oregon, showing just 36,973 miles on the clock. Remarkably, the car remained in the same town for a further 44 years before being imported to the UK. With only around five owners in 56 years, it is an exceptionally well-preserved and carefully kept example.

Thanks to its life in a dry climate and continuous garage storage, the car remains completely unwelded and still wears its original L60B Peru Green paintwork, now beautifully aged with a natural patina and polish-throughs that only time can create. The brightwork remains radiant, from the bumpers to the indicators, standing proudly against the deep green bodywork exactly as intended. Panel gaps and shut lines are excellent, reflecting its originality and lack of restoration work.

Opening the doors, bonnet, and rear hatch reveals an incredibly honest and unspoilt survivor. The original tool roll, jack, and even the moulded spare wheel spacer remain present in the front compartment. Under the bonnet, the original load card and factory rubber boot mat are still in place, further highlighting how untouched this car truly is. The headliner does show a couple of small tears, including a neatly stitched repair that now forms part of its story, while the original Light Sand basket weave upholstery, seats, and door cards remain in very presentable condition.

The Squareback sits proudly at its original stock height on white band tyres, complemented by chrome hubcaps and beauty rings, completing its classic period-correct stance. Mechanically, it retains its matching numbers engine, which was carefully stripped and rebuilt a few years ago with slightly larger 1641cc heads. It drives beautifully and comfortably keeps pace with modern traffic, while still delivering the authentic character these cars are known for.

What makes this car so special is its remarkable originality. In a world where most examples have been heavily restored or modified, this Squareback stands as an honest, unwelded survivor, preserved almost exactly as it left the factory.
